IT interview questions and answers are often thought of as difficult to predict as there are many potential areas of technology and business change that could be tested within an interview. However, this is often not the case as IT interview questions are often deliberately targeted at testing a candidate’s specific capability to perform the role that they have applied for.

Having got through the initial application phase for getting a new job, candidates can often still be poorly prepared to successfully complete an interview. Candidates must set aside adequate time to prepare for what are often very challenging interviews. Prior to an interview for this often time to allow a job candidate to prepare for IT interview questions which are related to their core skills and experience – as these should be the main requirements of the job vacancy. In addition, in preparing for these questions it also allows the candidate the opportunity to highlight their areas of strengths, but de-emphasise their weaknesses when they give their answers.

Competency based IT interviews are also a common and effective approach to allowing potential job candidates to be able to demonstrate the level of experience they have by relating specific examples of achievements within their jobs and careers to the questions posed by the examiner.

Although IT interviews are usually expected to be technically based, this is not always the case. There are many lesser technical roles within IT such as Project Manager, Service Introduction Manager and Business Analysts where the IT interview questions will be deliberately non-technical in nature to allow the interviewer to gauge a better understanding of what non-technical experience levels a candidate has. So, whilst candidates may benefit from having a technical background in IT, it is not always essential that they do.

It is more important to be prepared to be asked or ask questions in your field of expertise, regardless of whether these areas are technical or non-technical. Initial IT interviews are often carried out over the phone and with follow on interviews are carried out face to face. For more senior roles, regardless of whether they are permanent or contract, will often then require further face to face interviews with senior executives and board members.

IT interview questions and answers need to be thought through in advance of an interview. This is the case regardless of whether you are the interviewer or the candidate being interviewed.

As an interviewer you may decide to set a task for the job candidates which validates their responses to questions posed earlier in the interview. This is often an effective way of checking what a candidate has said that he or she has accomplished in their jobs and careers is actually true.
